As Ignatius of Loyola sat beside the river called the Cardoner, he experienced a new understanding of spirituality which surpassed the sum-total of all the spiritual experiences of his entire life. Ignatius narrated “This left me with my understanding so greatly enlightened that it seemed to me that I was a different person, and I had another mind different from that which I had before.” (Ignatius’ Reminiscences n 30). This experience of Inigo was a dramatic gift, not the outcome of his own efforts. There was a transformation of his inner faculties, so that his whole life took on a new and dynamic meaning. Today our prayer, sinking into Transformation and the life of the World shall be woven through John Philip Newell’s prayers/readings from the Hebrew, Christian and Islamic worlds.
