The First Spiritual Exercises ministry began in Australia over 17 years ago when it was suggested to Michael Hansen SJ that he research and write about the exercises first offered by Ignatius and his companions.
This form of the Exercises had become somewhat hidden from view, until Michael adapted them for the contemporary world. After thorough research of their historical beginnings, he published his book, The First Spiritual Exercises.
Over these years the ministry has grown into teams offering the FSE across Australia and New Zealand and internationally.
This book revived the gift that is the First Spiritual Exercises – a simplified form of Spiritual Exercises that anyone can easily experience either by following the book and praying on our own, or in a group with a guide, meeting weekly to pray and share the fruits of the Exercises – over a period of 4 weeks.
To enquire about the First Spiritual Exercises, phone JISA on 1300 EXAMEN (1300 392 636) or email@example.com and we will put you in touch with a member from one of our teams of trained FSE givers across Australia and New Zealand. We are also available to come to your organisation, school, parish, or group to give The First Spiritual Exercises.
With the onset of COVID-19 and its impact on the world, Michael went on to develop short healing Exercises called the FSE Field Hospital Exercises. The name was inspired by Pope Francis’ concept of the Church as field hospital, a place to help people heal and to warm hearts.
These bite-sized Exercises can be prayed amongst the busyness of modern life. They bring astonishing clarity and healing to our everyday challenges. If you would like to receive a weekly email with an exercise, please click here to sign up.
To celebrate the Ignatian year, the FSE ministry is offering an online international conference taking a deep dive into the powerful healing moments of Ignatius’ life, and the parallels to our own lives, through the FSE Field Hospital Exercises. SAVE THE DATE 2-4 MAY 2022. Registrations will open in early 2022.
