Jesuit Social Services

From time to time in our JISA newsletter we will feature news or appeals from the Jesuit social ministries. This month we hear from Jesuit Social Services. JSS are a social change organisation working to build a just society where all people can live to their full potential.

They partner with community to support those most in need, and work to change policies, practices, ideas, and values that perpetuate inequality, prejudice, and exclusion.

Dropping off the Edge 2021

For more than 20 years, Jesuit Social Services has undertaken research into locational disadvantage across Australia. This work has included previous Dropping off the Edge reports in 2007 and 2015.

We are pleased to share that we will release a new Dropping off the Edge report, undertaken in partnership with the University of Canberra, later in 2021.

The report measures disadvantage based on 37 indicators including, for the first time, an environmental domain and lifetime disadvantage domain. Different analyses within the report will focus on aspects such as the concentration, the complexity and the persistence of disadvantage and the report will include qualitative data from  eight communities from six different states and territories around the nation.

The report will serve as a useful tool for governments and communities themselves to understand more about the web of disadvantage experienced by some locations and strategies that may be employed to build capacity and resilience so communities can thrive.

Keep an eye on our website at www.jss.org.au for more information about the report closer to launch.
